weiwei

In China, when we grew up, we had nothing...But for even the poorest people, the treat or treasure we'd have would be the sunflower seeds in everybody's pockets.

ark-an-sas

Yes, another wonderful visit with Mamaw!
We shopped at Penney's, made our spaghetti, talked about important things, laughed, and wished the visit was longer. But, we enjoyed every minute of it.

A Time to Talk
by Robert Frost

When a friend calls to me from the road
And slows his horse to a meaning walk,
I don't stand still and look around
On all the hills I haven't hoed,
And shout from where I am, 'What is it?'
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground,
Blade-end up and five feet tall,
And plod: I go up to the stone wall
For a friendly visit.

Merci, Mamaw. Merci.

a rose

from my family photo collection: Mamaw, Aunt Ruth, and Mama Gene

The Rose Family

by Robert Frost

The rose is a rose,
And was always a rose.
But the theory now goes
That the apple's a rose,
And the pear is, and so's
The plum, I suppose.
The dear only know
What will next prove a rose.
You, of course, are a rose -
But were always a rose.

I'm off to Arkansas tomorrow for another lovely visit with Mamaw.

bookshelf additions

Perch! Basket Bowl
I picked this much coveted bowl up at The Foundary for $31 (regular price $54). It's a great addition to our newly spruced-up bookshelf.

Air Plant!
I went over to my mom's this weekend & stole a few sprouts from the air plant in her backyard. I had the glass container already, so it was an easy project. It just needs a few rocks added to the bottom. I hope it likes its new home.

tape

So, I tried Jenny's tape project over on Pearl Street Interiors in our entryway & here's how it turned out...

Ta da! I think it adds a little somethin' somethin' to the space. The diamonds are far from perfect (especially towards the bottom), but the imperfection gives it character, right? I put the wall to the test this weekend when my mother-in-law visited & she thought I had painted the lines on, which is exactly what I was hoping for. Who knew tape could be so great?!

I used black Japanese Washi Paper Tape from Happy Tape. It took approximately 4 single rolls at $4.50 a roll + shipping, which brought the total project cost to less than $25 + a sore neck.

Before
Three cheers for tape!
Tape, tape, yaaaaay tape!

mud

An old favorite.

via Darren Segal

Rice
by Mary Oliver

It grew in the black mud.
It grew under the tiger's orange paws.
Its stems thinner than candles, and as straight.
Its leaves like the feathers of egrets, but green.
The grains cresting, wanting to burst.
Oh, blood of the tiger.

I don't want you to sit down at the table.
I don't want you to just eat, and be content.
I want you to walk out into the fields
where the water is shining, and the rice has risen.
I want you to stand there, far from the white tablecloth.
I want you to fill your hands with the mud, like a blessing.

air plant dreams

Air Plant Globe Terrarium by LBrand

Epiphytic plants (air plants) use photosynthesis for energy and obtain moisture from the air or from dampness on the surface of their hosts. - Wikipedia
