gen art: the new garde

Gen Art's The New Garde event was held last night at the Park Plaza Hotel in downtown L.A. - a fashion presentation of three emerging designers to kick-off Los Angeles Fashion Week.
I look forward to this event every year & this year was no different. Here are a few photos that I took of the offerings.

Le Sang Des Betes - A study of corporeal design and the structural environment through the means of garment construction.
Inspiration - 18th century gothic architecture and the films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder and David Cronenberg.

Le Sang Des Betes was my favorite of the three.
The show offered goth-inspired looks that were clean, structural and interesting. Each model sported long bangs cut on a diagonal, which gave them a toughness that was a good match with the clothing. Long vests, leggings, skinny pants, empire waist frocks, bubble hems, and voluminous coats were among the offerings, which were accessorized with short black leather gloves and black & clear heeled shoes.

Jesse Kamm - The defining characteristic of her collections is that Jesse not only designs the garments, but also creates all of the drawings that make up the textile designs. Each piece is hand printed and numbered as a part of a limited collection.

The collection had a safari-chic/70's feel to it that I really liked. My favorite look was a pair of silk khaki shorts paired with an orange silk sleeveless blouse and black tights (unfortunately, the close-up photo I took came out too dark).

JMary
There were some interesting pieces in this collection - nicely tailored coats, shirt dresses, and longer gowns. But, the presentation was poor, which made it difficult to see & appreciate the collection. The set was all mirrors, which were filthy/smudgy & the lighting was low. Not so good.

This is what I wore.
My friend Adriana: Is that a Hermes scarf?
Me: Yes, of course.
($9 at H&M)

I agree that Le Sang's presentation worked well with the collection and that JMary's set was insufficiently lit when the show opened. Thirty minutes into the show, however, the set designer added two front spotlights, after which I think JMary's set and collection really stole the show. The set was rather inspired: the mirrors and rotating stage allowed the audience to view the clothing from all angles at once (which can't be done even on a runway), and the collection contained, in my opinion, the most sophisticated and wearable pieces of all three collections. A wonderful night, in any case, with strong showings from all three designers.

jmary's mirror concept was great & i loved the fact that the models were on a moving platform. but, it really bothered me that no attention was paid to making sure the mirrors were clean. and i'm not talking about just a few smudges here and there. they were filthy.
